FLEA IN HER EAR
This is widely recognised as one of the funniest plays
ever written, and features many of the popular star actors
associated with Nanzikambe's work.
Sponsored by the French Cultural
Centre, Wakutsina Khutu... A Flea in Her Ear opened there on 5th
December and also played at The Warehouse Culture Centre in
Blantyre.
In A Flea in her Ear, the speed with which the fabric of
Feydeau's characters' lives unravel is breathtaking. From one small
event (a wife opening her husband's parcel 'by mistake') the whole
play expands until you are bewildered at how so many
misunderstandings and miscommunications can happen in so short a
time.
The music (an essential feature of all our shows) has
been specially written and recorded by Blantyre musicians The
Kasambwe Brothers (pictured above, in rehearsal).
While remaining faithful to the pace,
plotting and delicious madness of the original, the company has
adapted Feydeau's classic farce to an African setting. Set in
Malawi, the Spanish foreigners of the original become a fiery
Nigerian couple Lucy and Abele Nwankwo.
The seedy hotel the characters all
find themselves in is The Tasty Honey Hotel, and the proprietor is
now Mai Wapindula, a colourful ex-prostitute providing various
'confidential services' for her guests. As she says, many of her
guests are married - "but not to each other!"
