Nanzikambe’s efforts in addressing the HIV and AIDS challenge in Malawi.
Background
It is an open secret that despite rigorous efforts and interventions from numerous sectors to contain the spread of HIV and AIDS , high rates of transmission continue to persist in Malawi, particularly among the young people aged 15-24 years.. evidence suggests that while knowledge of protective measures against HIV and testing procedures is high , it is not consistently being translated into positive action by individuals and communities , heightened awareness is not necessarily leading to positive behavioral change. It is against this background that Nanzikambe Arts Theatre has been moved to address the urgent need to analyze and go beyond statistics on reported knowledge and broad awareness-raising campaigns and explore why this gap between knowledge and behavior exists.
Hence , in April 2007 Nanzikambe in partnership with Malawi Bridge embarked on an ‘Activator” pilot project using interactive forum-theatre techniques to explore themes around risky behavior and HIV and AIDS with young disadvantaged people in rural communities. The project was called Tiyeni Tigwiritse Ntchito Nzeru Zathu! The project specifically focuses on messages around 2 important risks associated with increased transmission of HIV: alcohol abuse and intergenerational relationships. The pilot project has been extremely successful and generated very positive feedback from all involved activators , drama group members , communities members , chiefs and other authority figures. 24 carefully selected Community Activators from 4 districts of Balaka , Mulanje , Ntcheu and Chikwawa were trained by Nanzikambe Arts experts in dynamic interactive facilitation techniques including role-play , challenger exercises , use of song and forum theatre and then returned to their home areas to establish and develop youth drama groups. They were presented with a comprehensive ‘ Interactive Communications Programme ’ training toolkit manual outlining the goals and objectives of the project as well as the specific role and responsibilities of the activators.
Project Summary
The broader goal of the project is basically about understanding the power-structures , habits , attitudes , beliefs and behaviors which hinder and prevent people from transforming knowledge into decisions and actions likely to reduce the risk of the spread of HIV and AIDS. How can people overcome social and cultural barriers and better negotiate the power dynamics that shape their interactions? How can people be empowered to adopt lower risk behavior , to choose to protect themselves? Exploring such questions requires deep and sustained engagement with people within the community setting. It requires a thorough understanding of the context within which people make decisions and the spectrum of potential consequences associated with these decisions. Decisions and actions must be analyzed and broken down within the context in which they occur. The actual experiences and stories of those who must negotiate safer sex and lower risk behaviors in their daily lives , the obstacles they face and the power dynamics they must negotiate are difficult to capture in survey or short-term research. Yet understanding these processes is essential to the successes of any intervention that aims to encourage people change their behavior.
Project Focus
- Increasing knowledge about behaviors that may increase risk of contracting HIV , especially;
- Risk of transmission in a relationship with someone more than 5 years your senior
- Risks of transmission through alcohol consumption
- Increasing knowledge of lower risk behavioral alternatives
- To increase efficacy to adopt alternate lower risk
- Building skills of community based drama groups to develop and produce accurate and engaging interactive drama on HIV and AIDS themes
PROJECT TARGETS
The project is being implemented in 12 communities of approximately 2000 inhabitants each in the 4 program districts. Thus 24000 beneficiaries are targeted to receive the messages on the 2 themes. So far , the number of beneficiaries already reached is shown here below:
