Mar – May 2006
Informal visits by Sam to join Malawian Dance troupe rehearsals and begin discussion with French Cultural Centre and Nanzilkambe Theatre Arts.
Jun - Jul 2007
5 weekly half day workshops with 20 members of Village Cultural Troupe, traditional Malawian dance group, culminating in informal performance small invited audience.
Sept – Oct 2007
8 half day rehearsals to refine work presented in July with selected group of 10 from Village Cultural troupe and Samban’goma Dance Troupe to produce ‘Finding Our Way’, publicly performed as a curtain raiser to South African company Umthombi.
Oct – Dec 2007
5 weekly half day workshops with existing group and selected others from 2 other groups.2 day intensive dance workshop with group and including selected actors with Nanzikambe TheatreArts (having completed tour). This culminated in informal performance for small invited audience.
Jan – Feb 2008
6 weekly half day workshops with potential group of 30, who self selected down to 20. 3 day intensive dance workshop and rehearsals with selected smaller group of 14, to develop a performance piece. This culminated in an informal performance (costumed) ‘Kachere Roots’ for an audience of approximately 40 people.
Mar – Apr 2008
6 half or full day rehearsals with Shyne Phiri, Assistant Director (Sam to UK) to refine ‘Kachere Roots’.
2 day workshop with Magnet Theatre, South Africa Public performance of ‘Kachere Roots’ to curtain raise Magnet Theatre. Also, for Contemporary Dance Lab performers to benefit from watching Magnet Theatre performance.
Sept – Dec 2008
Weekly workshops and 3 - 5 day intensive.
At this stage it is hoped that there will be a large (25) group of people developing intermediate skills and from this a selected advanced group (15 maximum) that will work more intensively on building performance work.
