PARALEGAL & Human Rights training

Enhancing Access to Justice

For three years Nanzikambe has been working with Paralegals who conduct daily clinics in prison, providing legal and rights-based assistance, advice and education on the criminal justice system, empowering remand prisoners to know and use the law. This aims to enable them, for example, to know how to apply for bail on their first appearance in court, how to conduct their own defence in trial, how to cross-examine a police witness who was violent towards the accused whilst in police custody.

“You’ve brought freedom inside the walls

Joni Masa, Zomba Prison

Nanzikambe has provided the methodological framework by integrating the use of drama, theatre-based educational techniques, and dynamic, interactive facilitation - enabling paralegals to make each prison clinic fully interactive so that participants discover the law, and what they need to know, for themselves, and rehearse for reality. This has dramatically increased participation and enhanced participants ability to understand and apply the law to their own situation.

Save the children - HIV and AIDS

Specific project officers utilising local drama groups for message delivery have been trained in using theatre-based methodologies for research, communication and behaviour change interventions.
